Embracing – or Denying – Your Diabetes

“I’m challenging you to make the rest of your life the BEST of your life!” Every person must decide how they will respond to their diagnosis of diabetes...some will try to deny the disease and simply hope that it goes away. Others will dance around the issue, choosing to downplay the diagnosis while silently cursing its effects on their body and their lives. Still others will only partially embrace their disorder, only slightly altering their diet, lifestyle issues or personal mindset.

But some of you won’t take your diabetes diagnosis lying down.

You will become proactive about your situation, making a conscious effort to research the disorder online, at the local library, consult with physicians, visit with friends who share your disorder, or reach out to local support groups for information and ideas about managing it. You are the fortunate ones who will quickly discover that diabetes is not a sentence of death but a wake-up call for life!

You will learn that knowledge is power. You will embrace the notion that choosing a smarter lifestyle, proper diet, regular exercise, consistent medical care, specialized skin care and proper clothing is a prescription for a better, healthier and longer life – regardless of your diabetes.

You will understand that a positive attitude is everything! To take to heart the adage that ‘life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass (it may never pass); it’s about learning to dance in the rain’. This reminds us of how important it is to face challenges with a smile on our face and a resolve to overcome our situation.

Most importantly, you will be empowered to live your life not as a victim, but as a victor, who chooses to focus on all you can do and not dwell on what you can’t. With the proper diabetes education, choices, and positive attitude, there’s no reason why you can’t make the rest of your life the BEST of your life!
